I am not a Trump supporter,. But - you should do what you think is right. You have a lifetime track record of seeing all aspects of a situation and using your judgement in a way that creates a Kiddush Hashem, and we trust you to do the same again this time.
Not sure why some people are wrapping their anti-Trump passions into such righteous indignation and moral superiority, but you deserve more credit than you are being given, and you should trust your judgement.
You didn't say you are supporting Trump. You are being asked to address the Republican convention in an invocation, as a spiritual leader, not as a political leader, and I assume you have given thought as to what message you want to deliver, and that it will be a good message, not a chillul hashem. One that Republicans will need to hear - not one that will tell them only exactly what they want to hear already.
It is preposterous to assume that you need lecturing on not appearing to support policies that are inhuman or unkind. I am sure you will find a way to make it clear exactly what your presence at a convention means and doesn't mean - appearing two days before even the candidate makes an entrance, you will surely not be wearing a "Make America Great Again" red cap, but a Yarmulka that conveys "Make God and Man Great again."
So please use your judgement. Go if you think you should. Say what words in your invocation that God inspires you to say for the betterment of mankind and for the benefit of the entire Republican party which could surely use a divinely-inspired and inclusive message.
People don't suddenly turn stupid or superficial or unethical overnight. After a lifetime of thoughtful and courageous activities, and a LIFETIME OF AVOIDING MIXING IN TO U.S. Politics, we are sure you will use this occasion for the benefit of the Jewish people and the world - JUST LIKE you used the opportunity to join BARACK OBAMA a few years ago in a multidenominational prayer event, despite opposition then from other naysayers, and used the opportunity then for important private conversation on things that needed to be said. Here too, if you decide to still go, we trust and encourage you to do what you think is right, and to say what needs to be said, to the audience in attendance and the many millions listening in.
We have no doubt that you understand the responsibility that this messaging opportunity will provide you, and that no one will think this is a candidate endorsement, and that you are going and speaking out of a sense of a more important mission. So, do what your wisdom and judgement tells you to do. Those attributes have not let you down until now. We will give you the benefit of the doubt - you have earned that in spades.
