The fact that this petition received 11 000 supporters and was tabled in Parliament was something of a victory in itself. Of course the Stafford by-election had something to do with what happened next. But there were at least 11 000 reasons why one of the lessons learned by the government from that by-election was that this amendment was unnecessary, unpopular and unacceptable. On 5 August 2014, the government reintroduced the requirement for the CCC chair to have bipartisan support. We cannot forget that those who opposed this amendment in the first place were the subject of sneering criticism from several members of the government. And the LJIQ remains alarmed by the radical legislative agenda that has been pursued by the Newman Bleijie government. In many respects, the agenda is as ridiculous and unnecessary as was this amendment. It actually betrays the conservative principles that dictate preservation of all that is good about our system of justice. Those interested in the wider debate can find useful information on www.ljiq.asn.au. But on this issue, at last and at least, sanity has prevailed. For your contribution to that result, many thanks.
