The issue

Education Queensland insists on only allowing their staff to call students by their legal name unless they have parental consent. This violates the Trans @ School section of the Queensland Human Rights Commission. TransAtSchool.PDF

Deadnaming is where a person is called by the name that they no longer use. It can be distressing to the person to use a former name as this may be perceived as denying their gender identity.

Not every family has supportive parents that will let schools call their children their chosen name.

For some students, school is their only safe place where they can use their chosen name and pronouns.

Overall, this rule made by Education Queensland is hurtful to transgender students and students that prefer a shortened version of their name (For example Abby from Abigail). Sign this petition to allow all students to use the name and pronouns that they want to go by.
