Melinda Katz’s Queens District Attorney campaign says she was endorsed by Assemblyman Brian Barnwell.

Only problem? Barnwell (D-Woodside) insists he hasn’t endorsed her — or anyone else in the crowded race.

“I didn’t endorse anyone,” Barnwell told the News. “I’m too busy up in Albany dealing with legislative action to get involved.”

Barnwell says he has no conflict with Katz, but he does want her to stop using his name in vain.

“There’s no bad blood with Melinda or anyone else,” he said. “But I didn’t endorse.”

A spokesman for Katz’s campaign said the endorsement snafu was the result of a phone call in which Katz believed Barnwell was offering his backing.

“His name has been on our campaign literature for months,” said Grant Fox, the Katz campaign spokesman. “We are happy to remove it and would have done so if he simply asked.”

Katz, the borough president, is a front-runner in the race. Other top candidates include Tiffany Caban, Rory Lancman and Gregory Lasak in the June 25 Democratic primary to replace Richard Brown, who died last month. The winner is a prohibitive favorite to win a term in November.
