CORONA, QUEENS – Public defender Tiffany Cabán received another high profile award in the run up to the Queens district attorney on Wednesday, when social justice groups Make the Road Action and VOCAL-NY announced their support for his candidacy.

The Make the Road Action base organizations and the VOCAL-NY Action Fund are the last members of an influential group of progressives who support Cabán in the June 25 elections for the next DA in Queens. The national criminal justice reform group, Real Justice PAC, founded by the famous activist Shaun King, and the former New York governor candidate, Cynthia Nixon, both supported Cabán.

"I spent most of my life criminalizing because I grew up poor and black in New York City," Carl Stubbs, leader of the VOCAL-NY Action Fund, said Wednesday. "The DA office in Queens has worsened my life by overcharging and punishing me when I needed support and access to resources. I lost decades of my life in prison, but now at 67 I could not be happier supporting Tiffany Cabán for the Queens district attorney. "

Make the Road Action and the VOCAL-NY activists gathered in Corona Plaza on Wednesday to announce the approval, with colorful signs asking for an end to the bail in cash, no new jail, the abolition of the ICE and the decriminalization of sex work.

"My promise is that I will take you there with me to the Queens DA office to ensure our communities are safe," said Cabán on Wednesday.

Cabán is also getting a boost from the staff and volunteers from the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Congress campaign, according to a profile of the candidate published in The Intercept.

But Cabán's core supporters clash with the powerful Queens Democratic Party, which is supporting Queens Borough president Melinda Katz in the DA race.
