Help Save Our Seniors in Long-Term Care Centres (CHSLD)!!

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the major issues in Quebec’s CHSLD senior care facilities. These issues have been prevalent not only recently but for YEARS.

The problems stem from the lack of staff, training and  funding, amongst many other issues.

These major issues have been depicted by the many deaths across the CHSLD due to the spread of COVID-19 but also due to the lack of staff to care for the vulnerable seniors. Therefore, many of the deaths reported were caused by gross negligence.

The front line employees are doing their best, with the limited amount of resources, lack of training and adequate compensation provided as essential workers from our Provincial government.

Our government has said repeatedly that their main concern is to help the CHSLD but it’s too little, too late.

As of March 14, 2020, the province prohibited all visits to long-term care facilities across the province. At this moment, 519 long-term care facilities within the province have reported at least one case of COVID-19. It is known that nearly 45% of the provinces deaths are from long-term care facilities.

We are calling on the various levels of government  to fund and implement the following practices within the CHSLD across Quebec, whether they are private or publicly funded:

1.     Provide proper funding to increase wages of CHSLD workers as they are essential workers in not only the pandemic but within the CHSLD environment.

2.    Provide adequate training and provide all staff members in close contact with residents with the proper equipment to diminish the spread of illnesses such as COVID-19.

3.   Ensure to appropriate levels of qualified staff so that all residents can be cared for in a timely manner.

4.   Have quarterly  inspections by a NON- governmental body throughout all CHSLD and privately owned facilities.

5.   Designate an provincial ombudsman to investigate all complaints / issues relative to all public and private healthcare facilities.

This petition has been created  to secure  a better quality of life for our seniors. These changes need to be made NOW as this dire situation continues to worsen.

Thank You!!
