Installation of wildlife virtual fencing on Old Cooma Road

On 21 August 2020 I started mange treatment for a free living wombat named Eve, working with the farm-owner who granted access to her. She was very very sick but the strongest and most tenacious wombat I've ever met. Her eyes were completely covered by mange crust which left her blind. Although I help many wombats, Eve captured the imagination of so many who followed her recovery closely.
Despite being so sick and blind, she navigated her area knowing exactly where to go, where to cross the creek and where all the burrows are. I added blue food colouring to her medicine so anyone could instantly identify her as the wombat with the blue back & bum :)
Unfortunately she kept crossing a road to another paddock daily and I implored the community to slow down here as it's a 80 zone where most go 100. This stretch of road is surrounded by farms, with bus stops for kids and a lot of wildlife. But the speeding cars have little regard for the speed limit on this road.
After 10 days of treatment, her eyes started opening ever so slightly. I was so happy with her progress and had confidence that she would make a full recovery and photographed her late one afternoon, soaking up the sun. Little did I know that would be the last time she felt the sun on her face.
That night, a car hit her in the middle of the road, dragged her over 15m and left her for dead, without stopping to pull her off the road, or checking whether she was still alive, or if she had a joey. My soul broke when I saw a dead wombat with a blue bum.
Despite overwhelming support from the local community, there is still a big component of road users who choose to speed on this road.
The only solution to this stretch of Old Cooma Rd (between Burra Rd and Monaro highway), is wildlife virtual fencing and if they can, speed cameras.
Please sign and share this petition to the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council to install virtual fencing to save wildlife from being hit by cars on this busy road.
