Que el Gobierno de Canarias detenga el exterminio de gatos y hurones

El Gobierno de Canarias ha declarado la guerra a los animales de las islas. En lugar de optar por métodos éticos no lesivos, como los que se llevan años presentando a las diferentes administraciones y se aplican en cientos de ciudades de España, han decidido contratar a la empresa Gesplan y gastar cientos de miles de euros en capturar y matar gatos y hurones. ¡Es una vergüenza!
Esta semana, representantes de PACMA, la Asociación SOS Felina y la Asociación de Amigos de los Animales El Juaclo se han reunido con la consejera y el director de Medio Ambiente de Canarias, además de una persona de la empresa Gesplan. Acudieron, junto a SOS Felina, a petición de El Juaclo como asesoramiento experto y su intención era la de defender métodos éticos y respetuosos para el control de las poblaciones de animales que el Gobierno canario considera «invasores», pero se han topado con un muro inamovible que no quiso escuchar las alternativas propuestas. Pese a no haber realizado ningún censo oficial, que es siempre el primer paso para averiguar la población de cualquier especie, han contratado a una empresa para capturar a gatos «asilvestrados» y hurones y matarlos cruelmente. Para ello, colocarán jaulas trampa no selectivas, en las que además puede caer cualquier animal, con el consiguiente peligro para su integridad.
El Gobierno canario ha estipulado que los felinos serán matados con inyección letal, pese a que ningún veterinario de la zona ha accedido a realizar la eutanasia injustificada en animales sanos. En el caso de los hurones, barajan ejecutarlos in situ con pistola de aire comprimido y, en caso de no matarlos, entregarlos al colectivo de cazadores, donde su fin será todavía más cruento.
Toda esta barbarie será financiada con dinero público, de todos los habitantes de Canarias, con un presupuesto que supera los 273.000 euros. Esta cuantía podría dedicarse a aplicar una alternativa ética, pero el ejecutivo canario parece empeñado en maltratar y acabar violentamente con la vida de estos animales.
De hecho, el Gobierno canario, que durante la reunión habló en todo momento de la isla de El Hierro como escenario de la cruel erradicación, ya destinó 599.263,74 euros en agosto de 2020, a beneficio de la misma empresa, para exterminar animales en la isla de Tenerife. Se trata de una administración que escoge sistemáticamente la violencia, el maltrato y la muerte de animales como primera opción.
¡No podemos permitir esta aberración!

The Government wants to exterminate the Canary Islands' feral cats
The Canarian Government has declared war on these islands' animals. Instead of opting for a more ethical and less harmful method for the control of their population (Trap, Neuter, Release) which has been applied for many years under different administrations and which is being applied now in hundreds of Spanish cities, the Canarian Government has decided to spend hundreds of thousands of euros contracting a company called Gesplan to catch and kill cats and ferrets. This is truly disgraceful!
This week, representatives from PACMA (Partido Animalista), SOS Felina and the Asociación Amigos de los Animales El Juaclo met with the Counsellor and the Director of the Environment of Canarias, as well as one representative from the company Gesplan. They attended the meeting following a request from El Juaclo, in order to provide their expert advise. Their intention was to defend the use of ethical and respectful means to control the population of animals which the Canarian Government considers ''invaders''. Unfortunately it was like talking to an immovable wall and they wouldn't listen to any of the options the representatives of these animal protection organisations proposed.
An official census hasn't even been done – this is always the first step to find out the population of a species – however, they have already contracted a company to catch feral cats and ferrets and cruelly kill them. To accomplish this, they're employing non-selective traps, into which any animal could fall and suffer the consequences.
The Canarian Government has decided that felines will be killed by lethal injection, even though no vet in the area agrees to inexcusably euthanise healthy animals. In the case of the ferrets, they plan to execute them on the spot using a compressed air gun or to give them alive to groups of hunters, in whose hands their fate will be even more cruel.
All this brutality will be paid for with public money from all the population of Canarias, with a budget of over 273.000 euros. This amount of money could be invested in an ethical alternative, but the Canarian Executive seems determined to mistreat and to violently end the lives of these animals.
In fact, during the meeting the Canarian Government mentioned continuously El Hierro island as being the location of this cruel annihilation. They've already destined 599,263,14 euros in August 2020 to this same company for them to exterminate animals on the island of Tenerife. We're in the presence of a public administration which consistently chooses violence, harm and death of animals as their first option. Sign and share my petition PLEASE!
