Classes at UT Austin have been cancelled for the semester and are scheduled to be moved to an online platform. An overwhelming majority of students are not currently residing in West Campus because the threat of the coronavirus has become a public health issue. It is unethical for student housing companies to demand that monthly payments be made for rent on apartments that will be unoccupied due to the severity of the disease. The families of students that will be financially affected by the ensuing economic crisis cannot afford to pay for housing anywhere within the vicinity of the UT campus, which has already confirmed several cases of the virus. Many small businesses were put on hold and people were laid off as a consequence of this pandemic. West Campus student housing conglomerates will be deleting millions of dollars from student accounts this year and all that we request is that they have some compassion for our situation and help us to work out a compromise. Ideally, student rent will be refunded for the remainder of the semester as it is causing hardship for students and their families.
