Help Improve QueSci's Learning Environment Through the Installation of Air-Conditioners

The Issue

In a tropical country like the Philippines, the heat that we experience every day is not unusual so much so that we fail to notice how it is becoming detrimental to one’s learning. In a typical classroom setting, especially in a school like Quezon City Science High School, it is customary to see students busying themselves with their hand fans and portable electric fans, all whilst struggling to accomplish their academic tasks. There are instances in which students crowd in front of electric fan/s in order to alleviate the stuffy heat.

Research has shown that the academic performance of students declines in higher temperatures. In hotter classrooms, headaches and heat exhaustion symptoms develop. These physical symptoms can hinder academic performance. Warm classrooms also decrease interest and alertness, thus distracting students.

High humidity often accompanies high temperatures. Increased humidity can make students feel sleepy. Concentration test scores are also lower in humid, hot environments. In fact, research also suggests that the ideal temperature for maximum learning is between 72-77 degrees Fahrenheit or approximately 22-25 degrees Celsius.

This is where our group comes in.

What we aim to achieve in this endeavor is to bring awareness about the issue of improving our scholarly environment to the school's administration and GPTA, which we hope will pave the way for this petition to become a reality.
