There are many places with archaic and inappropriate names in Australia. Many of them are in Victoria, and there are a few with the name ‘Blackfellow’ Lane, Swamp etc.

’Blackfulla’ is a modern version of the word used by Aboriginal people as a term (usually respectfully intended) to describe each other. It does not have the same connotation as ‘Blackfellow’... a word used by colonialists and invaders.

In Hillcrest, near Ballarat in Victoria there is a Blackfellows Lane. The sign has been used by racists on-line to exhibit monstrous behaviour. Recently, a golliwog was hung from the sign and shared on Facebook.

We call upon the Pyrenees Shire Council to rename this Lane after consulting local Wathaurong elders for an appropriate alternative. If people insist on exhibiting their racist monstrosities on-line with no action from Facebook, then they must be prevented in other ways. 

Besides, it’s 2018. All these names need to go.
