The Issue

Thank you for reading our petition this is Mason Weintz and Yaroslav Ryzhuk from The Nokesville School. PWCS made the decision recently to send us students back to school in phases starting with kindergartners on Nov 10th. On July 15th the board voted 8-0 unanimously in favor of going back to school 50% in the second quarter.

How does this affect us students? according to the 8VAC20-671-420 Standard School Year and School Day. The county must be able to provide us students with a minimum of 180 teachings days a year. With having our days split in virtual learning we get about an average of 10 and a half hours a week of teaching not meeting the 27 teaching hours a week required to us by VA state law. By state law the county is also supposed to provide their students with 180 teaching days. If we stay the entire year virtual without including weekends and holidays, we would only be getting about 140 days of teaching days not meeting the requirement by the VA law to have a minimum of 180 teaching days. That does not include Monday’s asynchronous days.

But what about COVID-19 spreading? I have a list of solutions from the World Health Organization website.

Hygiene and daily practices at the school and classroom level, where your mask at all times, stay away at least 6 feet from others

.
Protection of individuals at high-risk, locate students who have poor immune systems etc. and come up with strategies to keep them safe from others.

Have good communication with students and their parents, the school should keep parents updated about procedures to enter the building etc.

Social distancing inside and outside classrooms.

The school system should have updates on students’ immunizations and vaccinations.

Other reasons to go back may include sports, friends, social life, get out of the house, I miss the homemade banana bread miss Peggy made for me.

In conclusion all the middle school and high school students that are sighing this document want to go back to school. After all the middle school and high school students are all in different buildings. We want to have a definitive date on when we can go back this school year as soon as possible.

Thanks for signing Mason Weintz and Yaroslav Ryzhuk, The Nokesville School
