The Issue

Declawing cats and debarking dogs are inhumane practices that cause unnecessary suffering for both animals. Declawing a cat leaves it vulnerable and opens it up to long-term behavioral and physical problems. It's comparable to losing or amputating a human finger at the last joint. Meanwhile, debarking is a surgery that results in long-lasting physical harm and psychological distress. It includes cutting tissue from a dog’s vocal cords to reduce noise or barking.

The impact of this problem: Declawing a cat and debarking a dog has serious consequences for both the cats and dogs’ well-being and relationship with its owner. This has a lot of impact on their physical, emotional, and psychological health.

For cats:

Physical Pain and Discomfort Declawing is a painful surgery. Imagine walking after your toes have been amputated.
Loss of natural behavior: Through scratches keep their claws healthy. Without their claw, they can’t scratch, and because of this cats may feel uncomfortable possibly even anxious.
Behavioral Issues: Declawed cats often develop behavioral problems like increased aggression or biting out of fear because they no longer have claws to defend themselves.
Long-term Health Problems: Cats that are depressed may experience arthritis or breaking of their other joints which can lead to the decline of their overall quality of life.
For dogs:

Physical health risks: Dogs can suffer from infections and develop breathing difficulties.
Psychological and emotional effects: Debarking a dog may increase anxiety and frustration especially when it can’t properly communicate with its owner or express what they need.
Loss of Communication; They might communicate with other animals.
For the owners of both cats and dogs;

Guilt and emotional consequences
Behavioral Challenges
Public Perception and Legal Implications

Ethical Concerns
For the Cat/ Dog and owner relationships:

Loss of Trust
Decreased Quality of Life

Why we should put a stop to this?: It causes unnecessary pain and harms the animals chronically, as well as making them more aggressive and anxious around humans. This is often only done for human convenience and no medical reasons.

Solution: We urge you to support laws that help stop the declawing and debarking of animals. These procedures are inhumane and have no place in modern animal care. There are many effective and compassionate ways to manage animal behavior without resorting to such cruelties.
