PUT TRANMISSION LINES UNDERGROUND TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT & RURAL COMMUNITIES
We are calling on the Federal and State Governments to act urgently and force Transgrid to stop and rethink HumeLink for current and future generations, by taking the transmission lines underground just like they do in Europe, Asia, California, and many other forward-thinking jurisdictions around the world.
Don’t let a foreign owned company risk the lives of our precious wildlife and rural communities, by cutting corners and destroying 2500 hectares of precious land to cater for dangerous, old tower technology to deliver the HumeLink transmission project.
Transgrid’s HumeLink proposal is to cut an ugly 360km long, 70-metre-wide scar consisting of towers as tall as the Harbour Bridge pylons through old growth forests, state forests and working farms, from Wagga Wagga and Kosciusko National Park to the edge of the beautiful Southern Highlands.
WHY WE ARE OPPOSED TO THE CURRENT PROPOSAL
This proposal to use technology first developed in the 19th century and based on flawed economics and short-term thinking, fails the Australian community in four key areas including:
Environment: Building the proposed HumeLink Towers will see the loss of significant native vegetation, old growth forests, homes of many endangered and near extinct species including Koalas, the Greater Glider and Spotted Quoll, rehabilitated woodland, with serious implications for greenhouse gases and global warming.
Bushfire Risk: The towers will severely inhibit firefighting efforts on the ground and in the air, while also increasing the risk of bushfires, loss of life and property. High voltage powerlines have not only been found to start fires, but effectively stop the management of bushfires because the space over and under powerlines are no go zones for firefighters.
Economy: HumeLink will be NSW’s most expensive energy infrastructure project ever. Yet, it is an economic disaster that will require intense ongoing maintenance and associated high costs. The current plan is solely driven by minimising upfront costs to get the project done and have profits start pouring in.
Rural Communities: Transgrid’s HumeLink proposal devastates thousands of regional communities, businesses, and prime agricultural land, while significantly increasing the potential for mental health issues and depression. Studies have shown that damage caused to landscapes by powerlines may have negative impacts on the well-being of the population and economy of the areas that rely heavily on tourism.
The decisions we make today will impact future generations. These towers once installed, will remain forever, earning profits for foreign entities at our expense.
Don’t let a foreign owned company risk our lives and our precious wildlife by cutting corners with dangerous, old technology, flawed economic modelling and short-term thinking. STOP, RETHINK, HUMELINK.
