Imagine Ireland cheering its republic by flying the Union Jack. How about the USA using British flags for the 4th of July? Or celebrating the birth of Ukraine by ordering Soviet flags flown? Crazy, right? 

Yet Canada marks today's anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom by ordering every federal property to fly the British flag. It's a wrong-headed rule that this petition seeks to change. We were not born of revolution, but marking independence day with the flag of our former colonial ruler is inappropriate, and fails to symbolize the independence being celebrated.
