Put the Canadian back in the CFL

Put the Canadian back in the CFL
The Issue
The CFL has a problem with its C. The days of starting 6 Canadians on offence and 6 Canadians on defence are long gone beyond any recent memory. In today’s game a team is only required to have 7 out of the 24 starters, be Canadian. Also 2 out of those 7 can be nationalized American players who have been star players with their team and have earned that spot and been a resident of the city they play in for multiple seasons.
less than 33% of the players and coaches on a CFL team are Canadian and/or have roots in amateur Canadian football. A argument could be made that the Canadian Broadcasting laws should not even be allowed to air this content. The CRTC presently requires that at least 55% of all programming aired annually by broadcast television stations, and at least 50% of programming aired daily from 6:00 pm to midnight, must be Canadian content.
The CEBL, Canadian Elite Basketball League, only allows teams to play 2 Non Canadian residents and this has helped to grow the game of basketball in Canada down to a grassroots level. Currently the NFL runs more minor sports programs and camps in Canada than the CFL. NFL organized and sponsored Minor Flag Football is the number one grassroots football program nation wide.
major issues with the current rules are that teams have created “un-skilled” positions specifically for Canadian players. Most teams will have 5 Canadians on offence the typical assigned positions o-line (LG,C,RG) Wide receiver, fullback/te slotback. On Defence the typical positions are Defensive tackle, safety, WLB. The Quarter Back does not count as a Canadian on the field in the current CFL format. If a Canadian does play QB he will not count towards the 7. This has led to a lack of development of Canadian QBs from the CFL all the way down to the grassroots levels, Minor, High School, Amateur, Junior, Usports. The QB is without question the most crucial position to a offence for any team, they have the ball on every play. It is important for the Canadian Football league to put the Canadian back in the game.
The CFL is currently hiring a new commissioner, so change is coming. Now it is time to put the Canadian back if the CFL!
Rules that need to change for equal rights for Canadian football players;
- Only 6 non Canadian residents may play on the field at all times during the game; including offence, defence, and any special teams
- All player positions on the field count towards this rule including QB
note, can still Nationalize 2 key franchise American players who fall under the current rules of being nationalized
