Put Police Chief Leronne Armstrong back on duty!

The Issue

New mayor Sheng Thao put police chief LeRonne Armstrong on administrative leave as soon as staff told her that a biased law firm advertising itself as serving "victims of police misconduct" had laid charges against him.

• Thao did not give Armstrong an opportunity to address whatever issues concerned her.
• Thao may well have known this attack on the Chief had been brewing since October.
• Thao did not consult community leaders, such as Oakland Chinatown chamber of commerce chief Carl Chan, who says, "We want to see our police department is being stabilized so they can do their job serving all communities."

Oakland has a contingent of activists who expect all Oakland residents to suffer endless carjackings, robberies, and vehicle smash-ins, while the activists collect social-program grants for years, while they fashion their white-glove rules for asking criminals not to be bad. Just this past weekend, mayor Thao congratulated activist Cat Brooks on the anonymous $3.5 million gift she received for such anti-police projects.

We want Chief LeRonne Armstrong back on the job! The department is in limbo without its chief. The city is more than ever at the mercy of perpetrators of violence. Mayor Thao should reverse a hasty, ill-informed, pandering decision immediately!
