Hi Everyone,
We wanted to share a further update following recent developments in the case relating to the methanol poisoning incident in Laos.
As reported publicly, 13 individuals were initially arrested. Of those, 10 people connected to Nana Backpacker Hostel were convicted of destruction of evidence and received suspended sentences and fines of approximately $185 (£135). We understand that no further action is currently planned in relation to those convictions.
It has also been reported that the owner of the distillery believed to have supplied the methanol is still awaiting trial.
The UK Government has stated that it shares the families’ disappointment at the outcome and expects robust action from authorities against those responsible for selling unsafe alcohol.
In response to these events, the Foreign Office has extended methanol related travel warnings to 27 countries considered high-risk and has increased awareness through social media and travel advice updates.
Whilst we acknowledge these steps, we continue to believe that more proactive prevention is needed, particularly clear warnings in airports, on flights, and in schools , so young travellers understand the risks before they travel.
We remain committed to ensuring that no other family experiences this very preventable tragedy.
Thank you for your continued support.
