The Issue

A close friend of mine's brother was tragically killed by the Dart train. This devastating event occurred near Herreras Restaurant, at the intersection of Illinois and Ravinia, leading up to the Westmoreland train station. The trauma and heartbreak of losing someone dear in such a preventable way is unimaginable; yet, the crossway remains just as dangerous today. How many more lives must be lost before something is done? This guard rail should be placed in his honor, not only to remember his life but to save others.

Every day, countless pedestrians and cyclists navigate this perilous crossing. There's no warning signs, and the sound of approaching trains offers little notice for those unfamiliar with the area. The inherent risks posed by this location have been overlooked for too long. The tragedy of a life lost should prompt immediate action, turning our grief into a catalyst for change and ensuring such incidents do not repeat themselves.

Installing guard rails is a basic yet vital measure necessary to enhance the safety of everyone using this route. Installing visible warning signs and creating auditory cues at safe distances from the tracks would alert and safeguard travelers, preventing senseless tragedies.

This petition calls upon city officials, the transit authority, and local leaders to prioritize public safety. Incorporating safety measures doesn't just protect lives today — it builds a stronger, more considerate community for tomorrow.

Please sign this petition to urge the proper authorities to take action. Together, we can honor the memory of those we have lost and ensure the safety of future generations. Protect our community and stand up for these necessary changes.
