Put Ceiling Tiles Back In Classrooms
The Issue
For decades, JFK MIddle School has had a special tradition for 8th graders. You get to paint a ceiling tile for a special teacher, with something connecting to the teacher or just the class. It was always your choice, the topic and the room. As of the 2026-2027 school year, 8th grade students are no longer allowed to put ceiling tiles in classrooms, or make them for specific teachers. From here on out, students must put their ceiling tiles in the hallways, and the painting on them must be of a place special to them. They are no longer allowed to be creative with their ideas, it must all be the same subject. The reasoning behind this is that, allegedly, the incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders won't understand your reference or specific painting. But they are missing the whole purpose behind ceiling tiles. Ceiling tiles are meant to be documenting students' memories and middle school careers while they were at JFK, and to leave their special mark on the school. It isn't fair to anyone, and the students should get a say in this decision. Suddenly changing the tradition is one thing, but not giving the students any warning either is another. Some students had this planned since 6th grade. I'm not going to stay quiet and let this unfair decision go through without a fight, and I could really use your help.
