Put British SEND Children First — End the Specialist School Crisis Now

The Issue

I am a mother of two young boys with severe autism. I am speaking out not just for them, but for the over 200,000 children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) across the UK who are being abandoned by a system that is broken, bureaucratic, and unjust.

👩‍👦 My Family’s Story

My eldest son could not cope in mainstream school and was left at home for eight months with no placement. I had to take the council to court, fighting for two years in endless meetings that went nowhere, just to secure him a specialist school.
My youngest son is six years old, non-verbal, and still without the right placement after four years of waiting. He was rejected by more than eight nurseries, all saying the same thing: without an EHCP they cannot secure funding. But EHCPs take 16+ weeks to compile — and even then, places are oversubscribed.
Today, he is on a reduced timetable. He cannot cope with the noise of a class of 30, so he spends his days in a small room with teaching assistants. He has no peers, no social interaction, and the only therapy he receives is from a speech and language therapist who visits just twice a year. This is not education. It is containment.

📉 A System That Fails Children

The NHS autism pathway is outdated, slow, and cruel. Families are buried under 45-page forms, often “lost” in the system. Clinics make us repeat the same information already provided. Autism nurses don’t answer the phone. Paediatricians can’t be reached directly. NHS PALS complaints go nowhere.
Families wait up to six years for a diagnosis of autism or ADHD. By the time children are seen, their early years are gone, and the chance for early intervention is lost.
The SEND system is top-heavy and detached. Decisions are made by officials who never meet the children. Schools’ recommendations are ignored. EHCPs come back unchanged. Parents are dragged through tribunals that happen only twice a year, while children lose irreplaceable Key Stage education.
Early Years Inclusion Teams appear, tick boxes, create paperwork, and disappear — while children remain excluded. There are no specialist nurseries, and mainstream nurseries are not funded to include autistic children.

💔 The Cost to Families

This isn’t just failing children — it’s breaking families.

Parents are left to “figure it out” alone. Many are pushed onto the child protection pathway, not because they neglect their children, but because they are overwhelmed. Social services rarely provide meaningful help.

I was once thriving in my career as a Business Analyst. Today, I live with chronic pain, depression, and financial strain as a single parent. Years of neglect and exhaustion even led to domestic violence and family breakdown.

Many parents I know are on antidepressants. Some turn to alcohol to cope. Others give up their careers entirely. Families carry briefcases of paperwork in a digital world. Sensitive information is mishandled, breaching GDPR. The emotional, physical, and financial cost is unbearable.

🚨 The Hidden Cost to Society

Every wasted year means talents undeveloped and potential destroyed.

Autistic children are not burdens — they are often highly intelligent, creative, and capable, if only given the chance. But instead of nurturing future taxpayers and innovators, the system manufactures dependency. We are creating a generation of adults with no skills, forced onto benefits, not because of their disability, but because they were denied help when it mattered most.

The NHS must also research why cases of special needs are rising and prepare accordingly, instead of folding its hands while families collapse.

This is not just a policy failure. It is a moral failure.

🛑 We demand that the UK Government:

  • Urgently build and fund more specialist schools to meet rising need
  • Guarantee a maximum 12-week timeline for EHCP decisions and school placements
  • Shorten autism/ADHD diagnosis waits from 6 years to months, with proper resourcing and technology
  • End gatekeeping practices and make EHCPs parent-led and transparent
  • Fund therapies (speech, occupational, behavioural) consistently — not token visits twice a year
  • Hold paediatricians and autism teams to KPIs — results, not excuses
  • Create a secure, paperless SEND system that is GDPR compliant
  • Fund nurseries to accept children with additional needs and establish specialist nurseries where required
  • Properly train and resource mainstream schools for real inclusion, not isolation
  • Invest in SEND research to understand rising cases and prepare for the future
  • End the culture of tribunals — no family should go to court to secure education

⚠️ A National Crisis

💔 No child should be denied education because they are autistic.

💔 No parent should lose their health, career, or family stability just to survive.

💔 No family should be broken by the very services meant to help them.

We cannot deny it any longer: this is a national crisis. Families are breaking. Children are being failed. Futures are being thrown away.

This nation must fix SEND. End hotels. Look after British children first.

✍️ Please sign and share this petition. Together, we can demand justice, reform, and a system that finally gives children with SEND the chance to thrive.
