The Issue

Even though the Croton-Harmon School District has spent thousands of dollars bolstering the security of our schools, there is one major component we are lacking - School Resource Officers (SROs) in all three schools.

A successful SRO program is focused on building healthy relationships between law enforcement and members of the school district to benefit individual students and the greater community.  A quick glimpse at our current Youth Officer program will show everyone that having this interaction between police and students is a major factor in building trust between everyone.

By signing this petition, residents of the Croton-Harmon School District are coming together saying we want additional security and an added layer of protection for our beloved children.

Aside from the added layer of protection these Officers offer, they can make a further impact in these ways;

  • Develop a much-needed rapport with the students they would work with each day,
  • Assist students when they need help school staff may not be able to offer,
  • Identify a potential threat to one’s self or to others
  • Should a situation arise, SROs can make an arrest - something security officers are not legally permitted to do,
  • Prevention or minimization of property damage in schools and surrounding areas,
  • Reduction of injuries to pupils and staff due to violence, substance abuse or other medical emergencies.
  • SROs are more than “a cop with a gun.”  They are also Mentors, Counselors, an invaluable information resource on safety and law enforcement matters, Protectors and Enforcers, First Responders, Community Liaisons, Emergency Response Planners and so much more.
