End The Isolation - Extend the WMATA into Manassas, VA

End The Isolation - Extend the WMATA into Manassas, VA
The Issue
Manassas is in strong need of public transportation reform. The WMATA(metro) is the main transportation service throughout the DMV metropolitan area. However, Manassas, VA is completely overlooked. As of January 4th 2023, there are no metro stops/station in Manassas. Without a metro station in Manassas, the options available to Manassas Residents to connect with the rest of the metropolitan area are very limited especially on weekends.
Currently, on the weekends, the Amtrak is the only service that routes to the metro and has a stop in Manassas. This sole option is expensive and infrequent, providing very little flexibility and convenience. Furthermore, Amtrak really isn't structured for short, spontaneous day trips in the metropolitan area (but it's great for distance travel).
Not having a convenient or affordable way to get to the metro is very isolating. Even if you have a vehicle, using it is bad for traffic, the environment, and the overall safety of our community. This lack in public transportation severely cuts Manassas off from the rest of NOVA, DC, and Maryland.
This petition is a call to Manassas City Mayor, Michelle Davis-Younger, the Secretary of Transportation Virginia, W. Sheppard Miller, the PRTC Board or Commissioners, and the WMATA in support of integrating Manassas with the rest of the metropolitan area in two ways:
- Add Manassas to the WMATA metro system. A metro bus stop in Manassas would be extremely useful. A metro rail station would be even better. Extending the system even at least through Centreville will be massively beneficial to the wellbeing of the city and its residents.
- Provide Manassas with a weekend bus service to the nearest metro station similar to the one Omniride provides for Woodbridge. (The Prince William Metro Express is a free bus service that runs frequently and runs on weekends. It connects between Dale City, Woodbridge, and the Franconia-Springfield metro station)
