Put an End to the Chicago Blackhawks Perpetuating Racial Stereotypes

Put an End to the Chicago Blackhawks Perpetuating Racial Stereotypes
The Issue
The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the last teams in all of sports to still have a name and logo that is offensive to the Native American and Indigenous community and the current owners, The Wirtz family, have stated that they do not plan on changing it.
The logo has already been changed many times but still has not made any real progress. The original design of the logo was an all-black side profile of a Native American, Black Hawk, inside a roundel featuring the team's name. Soon after the logo was colorized making the native Americans face red. 10 years later it was altered once again it was more detailed and looked like a stereotypical native American. Its current logo is the most detailed with painted markings on the face, and feathers throughout the hair. However, the expression looks tired and beaten down, a disservice to such a prominent figure in American history.
Many people within the Native American and Indigenous community have expressed their concerns to the Chicago Blackhawks owners countless times yet no change has been made. An Indigenous youth organization in Chicago, the Chi-Nations Youth Council, stated that the logo and name “symbolizes a legacy of imperialism and genocide.” Despite this, the owners maintain that their name and logo is actually honoring the community. The team was named by a white man 1920s with no connection to the community and has continued to be owned by white men ever since.
There is a solution to address and fix this problem regarding the use of this inappropriate logo. The logo has no reflection on the actual sport and other teams who had offensive logos have made the change. Teams such as the Golden State Warriors who used to be the Philadelphia Warriors had a logo showing a Native American playing basketball and changed their logo in 1969 to an image of the golden state bridge and if they were able to do it so can the Chicago Blackhawks.
Times are changing and logos such as this one are inappropriate and outdated so it is time the Chicago Blackhawks get rid of and change this offensive imagery of Native Americans.
