The Issue

Casinos in many countries are putting a ban on smoking. In 2004, Australia started banning smoking in casino and other workplaces. Following behind them is America. In 2009, National Council of Legislators from Gaming States passed a bill to implement the ban after studies shown that second-hand smoke exposure levels can be up to 18.5 times higher in Casino. Most recently, world busiest gambling hub Macau has begin prohibiting smoking on the gaming floors.

Singapore seeks to provide a clean, safe and healthy environment for the public and to safeguard them from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke. Over the year, HPB (Health Promotion Board) has been proactively educating the public about the harm smoking and second-hand smoke could cause. On 6 March 2012, Grace Fu (Senior Minister of State) told Parliament that "Our aim, in collaboration with HPB(Health Promotion Board), is to work towards a future where Singaporeans consider smoking not only detrimental to health, but also socially unacceptable".

As time goes by, more and more common area such as void decks, staircases, coffee shops to entertainment outlets and even jackpot machine rooms. Under Singapore law Smoking Act (Chapter 310, Section 3(1)), smoking in premises with jackpot machines are prohibition. But why is casino exempted from the ban?

Casino operator in Singapore are allow to operate gambling floor with smoking area. Unless you are working in a casino or have been inside the casino, you will never imagine how bad the air population is. Staff working in the casino will have to endure with the smoking for at least 7 or more hours a day. As we all know second-hand smoke is more harmful than smoking. There are hundreds of staff working in the casino. They are putting the body and health on the line in order to provide a living. The pain they might need to go through will be worst. From lung cancer, health disease and even Leukemia. Gamblers tend to smoke more than 3 times the number of stick when they are gambling.

We hereby hope that the Government of Singapore and respective authority looks into this matter and protect those poor citizens, foreign talents and even tourism visiting the casino. Save Us & Our Future.
