Put a cap back on student enrollment at NAU
The Issue
As a longtime resident of Flagstaff, I've witnessed firsthand the significant changes brought about by the growing number of students at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Many locals, myself included, have been profoundly affected by the increased student population. Our community's economy is suffering, and the job market has become fiercely competitive, making it challenging for lifelong residents to find employment.
Flagstaff is a unique and tight-knit community. For years, our economy thrived on a delicate balance between the needs of the local residents and the vibrant student population. However, in recent years, that balance has shifted as the number of students attending NAU has surged. This surge has sadly resulted in increased competition for jobs, leaving many locals struggling to secure employment in their own city.
The once harmonious relationship between the university and Flagstaff's community is in jeopardy. Local businesses, once reliant on the steady patronage of longtime customers, now see a transient and seasonal clientele. Moreover, the rental market has been drastically affected, with prices surging beyond the reach of many residents, as landlords cater to the temporary influx of students.
To restore economic stability and ensure opportunity for all residents of Flagstaff, it is essential to reinstate a sensible cap on student enrollment at NAU. Doing so would protect the wellbeing of our local economy and uphold the historic and community-focused values that make Flagstaff so special.
I call upon the administration of Northern Arizona University and the city officials of Flagstaff to reconsider the student enrollment policies. Consider the voices of the locals, the people who have contributed to this city for years. We need thoughtful solutions that support the growth of the university while simultaneously preserving the livelihood and culture of Flagstaff's longstanding residents.
By signing this petition, you will join in advocating for a balanced and sustainable future for Flagstaff. Let us work together to protect our economy, ensure plentiful job opportunities, and preserve the unique character of our beloved city. Your signature can make a difference. Please sign and support a fair cap on NAU's student enrollment.
