Push School Start Times in NJ to 8:45 am or Later for Adolescent Health
The Issue
As a parent, witnessing our children struggle each morning to wake up early for school is deeply concerning. The mornings become a battle against time and exhaustion, to head off to a place where they're expected to learn, concentrate, and perform at their peak. This recurring battle has raised major concerns around the negative effects our current school start times can have on teen health and academic performance.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a statement recommending that middle and high schools start at 8:30 am or later, allowing adolescents the sleep they desperately need for their health, safety, and academic success. According to the AAP, teenagers aged between 14-17 need 8-10 hours of sleep per night, a requirement many struggle to meet due to our current education system's schedules.
Instead of aligning with adolescent sleep patterns, which naturally shift later during puberty, our schools force our teenagers into a state of chronic sleep deprivation. This sleep deprivation can lead to serious health issues such as obesity, depression, and has even been linked to poor academic performance and diminished quality of life.
In the interest of our children’s health and success, we call on our school district administrators to seriously consider adjusting start times to 8:45 am or later. Let us promote a culture that prioritizes the well-being and success of our students by providing them a schedule that supports their physical and mental health needs.
