Push Back the Nightly Chromebook Shutdown Two Hours Later.

The Issue

Starting March 10th, Chromebooks will shut off from 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. This will make homework harder to finish and turn in after school. I've talked with students and teachers who have provided their insight on this topic. Many of their ideas have helped me form this petition. A large number of students have a busy after-school schedule and don't come home until late, making it hard for them to complete all of their work before 10 pm. The school claims that their new enforcement is to benefit sleep schedules, which will then branch off into helping anxiety and stress. However, they fail to see the stress that this new rule will cause. If a student gets back home late from an afterschool activity, they will feel pressure while on a time crunch. If most assignments on platforms such as Schoology are due at 11:59 pm, we should be given until that time to finish the work. Additionally, if the student is on vacation, having their computer be on Pacific time will cause complications while trying to complete their homework. We'd like to acknowledge that the families should set regulations for screentime and sleep, not the school. We believe the school's plan has many faults, and has not been considered clearly enough. Our alteration to pushing the time back instead of getting rid of it will help the students finish their online work while still getting an adequate amount of sleep.
