Almost all students taking a math or science course at Purdue University use WebAssign. WebAssign is taking advantage of students by forcing them to pay for access to their required homework assignments. Homework in some cases is up to 20% of the final grade in a given class. If students do not want to receive a poor grade in the course they need to purchase WebAssign. WebAssign is operating a monopoly at Purdue University because they can raise prices and still have 100% of the market share. In the Fall semester of 2014 WebAssign cost $45 for a semester and in the Spring semester of 2015 WebAssign cost $75 for the same time period. WebAssign has the ability to raise prices at the student's expense. The University should take into consideration the spending capabilities of the students that are forced to purchase WebAssign for access to homework assignments, rather than just disregard the rise in price. WebAssign is also known for marking some correct answers as wrong and vice versa. The online platform can hardly be considered reliable as it only accepts certain formats for some answers. Purdue needs to stand up for its students and find a lower cost, higher quality alternative to WebAssign such as Moodle, Canvas, or paper assignments. Sign this petition to discontinue the use of the monopolistic WebAssign at Purdue University.
