Purchase College Campus-Wide Plastic Bag Ban

Purchase College Campus-Wide Plastic Bag Ban
The Issue
The intent of this petition is to improve the environment surrounding Purchase College by banning single-use plastic bags. Single-use, non-biodegradable plastic bags are detrimental to the environment. NYS residents, including students on campus, use more than 20 billion plastic carryout bags annually. These single-use bags pollute our waterways, clog our sewers, endanger marine life, and cause unsightly litter. Single-use plastic lasts hundreds of years in landfills and are a potential source of harmful chemicals when broken down. While plastic bag recycling programs exist, less than 1% of bags are recycled in the US and they are not accepted at many recycling centers, including our campus waste hauler. This initiative will be implemented in phases that include engagement, education, and support to allow for a seamless transition. Some examples include providing durable, reusable bags to students, hosting campus-wide workshops and tabling events, and incorporating sustainability education into curriculum.
