Punish the Culprits who killed more than 100 Vultures in Kamrup Assam
The Issue
A heart breaking incident happened at Milanpur village of Chaygaon, Kamrup Assam. In the evening of 17th March when local villagers have found more than 100 vultures dying in a open field in the village.
Vultures are called the sweepers of Nature and all the species of vulture found in India are highly threatened most and of them are critically endangered. In India, the population of vultures of the Gyps genus started to decline in the late 1900s due to a chemical called Diclofenac, which is a anti-inflammatory drug used as a painkiller medicine for humans as well as cattle. If an animal treated with Diclofenac dies within a few days and if traces of that compound is still in the carcass which has been discarded in the open and if vultures feed on such carcass, the chemical pass on to the vultures. As a result of this, vultures start to develop gouts and tumors in their visceral organs and die within a span of 10-15days. This Diclofenac poisoning is one of the prime causes for the massive decline of Vultures across the country. But along with this many people mix other poison (pesticides) with the discarded carcass to kill jackals and dogs to take revenge as dogs and jackals kill poultry and small cattle, which is a heinous crime and an inhuman act.
The incident that happened at Chaygaon, which killed more than 100 vultures is associated with the poisoning of carcass upon which the vultures feed. We request the Assam government, to take up this matter as a serious one and make a ln enquiry about the whole case and punish the Culprits for their heinous inhuman act.
