Mumbai is the financial as well as commercial capital of the country, generating the highest contribution of 6.16% (i. e. $209 billion) to India’s total GDP.
But why is Mumbai not a global city yet, as far as infrastructure, transport, traffic & Metro train are concerned?
MMRDA after an indepth study in 2003, concluded that Metro Train system was the dream solution for Mumbai’s Mass Rapid Transport. Instead after 10 years, the metro promise turned out to be a mega nightmare for Mumbaikars with only 11.7 Kms constructed in 10 years at the rate of 1.17 Kms per year since 2004 .
How long will it take to complete the 160 kms Mumbai Metro planned by MMRDA and Government of Maharashtra?
Glaring example being the Charkop - Bandra – Mankhurd of the Mumbai Metro launched in August 2009 with great fanfare, just before Maharashtra Elections, was supposed to be originally completed by 2011. The project is stuck since then in controversies and unprecedented delays & work is yet to begin. Had this project been completed by 2011 with an estimated metro fare of Rs. 8.5/- per km, the total revenue generated was estimated to be Rs. 947 million each year since then. Estimated loss of revenue is around INR 4000 Crores. New schemes are being announced by the Government without removing the hurdles of the Charkop - Bhandra – Mankhurd Line that would ease the suburban load of the city.
London tube, world’s first metro transport underground line started in 1863 . It has 402kms of Metro line, The Singapore Mass Rapid Transport System began construction in 1983, has 152.9kms metro line, Shanghai has 538kms of Metro and Delhi has 193kms of Metro.
But Mumbai the 2nd largest populated city in the world and highest population density of the world per sq km, has not even implemented what was planned as per Mumbai Master Metro Plan 2004.
The United Nations has certified the Delhi Metro as the first metro rail & rail based system in the world with carbon credits for reducing the green house gases and for helping in reducing the pollution levels of the city by 4.5 lakh tonnes per year by removing more than 91,000 vehicles from the Delhi’s streets.
On the contrary, Mumbai has registered a whopping increase, 180441 vehicles between 2012-2013 alone ,thereby contributing the highest amount of Carbonmonoxide, suspended particles, lead, sulphurdioixde, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen, among other pollutants. The total number of vehicles registered in Mumbai as of 2013 was 22,08,954.
Mumbai is currently at a critical juncture and an average Mumbaikar is spending 3 to 5 hours daily in travelling leading to disease , distress, death and decrease in standard of living.
A citizens movement has brought the Mumbai Metro Mess issue to the forefront through a campaign called #MumbaiMetroMess. The team is trying to fix responsibility and ask accountability from the authorities for the mess created.
