The Issue

The extended loss of essential water and wastewater services in Punaluʻu following Hurricane Lala requires immediate, coordinated intervention from state, county, and private stakeholders.

Currently, residents face an anticipated six-month to one-year disruption of normal utility operations. The total failure of local infrastructure leaves community members reliant on temporary water tanks, bottled supplies, and portable sanitation.

This prolonged outage impacts vulnerable populations, including elderly residents, individuals with medical needs, and families with young children.

Beyond daily hardships, the absence of a reliable water supply creates severe public safety vulnerabilities, most notably compromising fire response capabilities across the area.

Recovery efforts by state agencies, county officials, public health regulators, and property representatives are a must.

Call to Action

Sign and share the petition to support the residents of Punaluʻu and urge governing bodies and private operators to prioritize permanent infrastructure restoration.

Let’s make sure this community knows that people across Hawai’i, and beyond, are standing with them.
