Pull the Homophobic AI Deepfake Ad Targeting Sen. Ossoff
The Issue
A political attack ad built with artificial intelligence (AI) is using homophobic innuendo to mock Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), one of the youngest members of the US Senate. The 30-second ad, paid for by the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican-aligned Super PAC, shows a woman at a beauty salon mocking the senator's spending on hair and makeup, then uses AI-generated imagery to imply he is hiding something, an insinuation widely read as mocking his masculinity. Ossoff has spent roughly $1,200 on hair and makeup this election cycle, a routine campaign expense both parties report as "media preparation."
Ossoff called the ad "genuinely troubling" and warned it represents "a slippery slope towards the destruction of truth in political debate," according to comments he made addressing the deepfake. He has demanded it be taken down immediately.
This is not an isolated tactic. Texas State Rep. James Talarico faced nearly identical attacks questioning his masculinity during his own Senate campaign. As AI tools make these fabricated, demeaning attack ads cheaper and easier to produce, campaigns are testing how far homophobic innuendo can go before voters push back. Political disagreement is fair game. Manufacturing fake, degrading imagery to mock a candidate's perceived masculinity is not.
The Senate Leadership Fund should pull this ad immediately and commit to keeping AI-generated deepfakes and anti-LGBTQ+ innuendo out of its campaigns. Sign the petition to demand the ad come down before this kind of attack becomes standard practice in American elections.
