The Issue

When you visit a Publix in Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and the northern portions of Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, you can buy only one BOGO item, and you’ll be charged HALF PRICE. However, in other Publix territories (including the chain’s home state, Florida), you must purchase one item at regular price in order to get the second one free. Their reason for not making the change for Florida customers?

“We began advertising BOGOs differently in these market areas due to state tax laws. Since then, the laws no longer apply; however, we have elected to leave the BOGO pricing in effect in these areas because our customers have grown accustomed to the way the pricing was established.”

Florida is home to a HUGE senior population with many, if not most, living on a fixed income, and having migrated from other states. Publix should take into consideration most seniors live in either two-person or single households, so that many BOGO items like bread are not a good buy for us because of their limited shelf-life. Since the BOGO half price policy already exists in other states, the change should be able to be implemented easily.
