I moved back to Florida from Tennessee, and one of the first things I noticed at my local Publix genuinely surprised me.

In Tennessee, when Publix runs a buy-one-get-one-free sale, I could buy a single item and get it for half price. In Florida, that same sale forces me to buy two items to get any discount at all — buy just one, and I pay full price.

This isn't required by Florida law. Publix itself has confirmed that. The company simply chose to keep the old two-item rule in Florida while giving shoppers in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia the fairer single-item half-price option.

That matters more than it might sound. BOGOs now make up nearly 40% of Publix's weekly sale promotions. For seniors — nearly 23% of Floridians are 65 or older, many on fixed incomes — and for small households, being forced to buy double just to get the sale price means paying more or walking away. Nobody should have to overbuy groceries to get a fair deal. 

Florida is Publix's home state and its biggest market. Floridians deserve the same fair treatment as shoppers in the other seven states.
