The Issue

Our boys died on scout trips. Lee Craddock in 1995. Scott Fanning in 1998, Roy Thornton in 1999 and Ben Leonard 2018. Their deaths were avoidable if correct procedures had been followed by the leaders they were with. There has been more than 12 boys deaths since 1995 and each time the Scouts said they will make changes. The Scout Association training and policies are not regulated by an outside body like schools and other outdoor activity groups. We are calling for a public inquiry into this. The Chief Exec of Mountain Rescue England and Wales Mike Park has said "The Scout Association needs 3rd party scrutiny. If it requires a public inquiry to bring in a 3rd party check then I support that".  At Ben's inquest which ended on 22nd February 2024. A jury concluded he was unlawfully killed by the explorer scout leader and his assistant due to neglect by the Scout Association. Change needs to happen to stop more children from dying.
