We have good news! Since we started this petition, several Parole Officers have exercised their First Amendment rights not to pay union dues to PEF.
In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court gave New York public employees the right to choose whether to pay union dues. The court’s 5-4 ruling in the Janus v. AFSCME case means public sector workers cannot be required to pay fees to a union they don't want to join.
Parole Officers finally have a chance to leave PEF. We can make this a reality if the majority of active Parole Officers, Senior Parole Officers and Parole Revocation Specialists opt out of PEF.
If a significant portion of us stop paying union dues to PEF, the union would have to consider decertification and walk away. This would clear the way for us to join the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA).
With over 1000 petition signatures and several Parole Officers not paying union dues, PEF can no longer ignore our demands to join NYSCOPBA.
