First, NYS elected officials repealed Civil Rights Law Section 50-a which makes all “personnel records used to evaluate performance towards continued employment or promotion” for police officers, firefighters and correction officers “confidential and not subject to inspection or review” except by court order.
Now, they want to take guns away from peace officers, which include correction, court, probation, parole officers and bay constables.
During the fight against the repeal of Civil Rights Law Section 50-a, NYSCOPBA and other law enforcement unions formed a coalition to voice their concerns with this ill-advised legislation.
This is exactly why Parole Officers require the backing of NYSCOPBA. Eventually, anti-law enforcement elected officials will try to repeal our peace officer status and remaining in a civilian union will only make matters worse for us.
