This map shows all the mining and prospecting applications currently in process (that we are aware of) ... 18% of the total land in Ugu DM. This really needs to be engaged with by all residents

I am a resident of the ward neighbouring uMzumbe, on the South Coast of KZN in South Africa, intimately aware of how our lives, our communities, our environment is intertwined with the land we call home. It is about more than scenic beauty; it is the foundation of our livelihoods, it is where our children play, it is our history and legacy. I am deeply concerned about the Lithium mine that has long-term irreversible impacts on our lives and this unique environment in an area that is marketed as an eco-tourism destination.

Residents in the immediate vicinity have reported that the walls of their houses have cracked, and roofs collapsed since blasting commenced and people are getting sick. People are forced to move 😭

Lithium mining poses risks of soil degradation, groundwater contamination, harm to local wildlife, and affects farming, disrupts ecosystems, and leads to a loss of biodiversity.

It is not enough to put a notice for rezoning in the paper in the week during elections and consider that to be adequate, with a notice on a fence, while the mining goes ahead. Decisions have been made without the input from those who will feel the impact in their everyday lives. Our voices must be heard, our concerns addressed, and our rights respected.

Every community member of Ray Nkonyeni/Umzumbe KZN, and neighbouring wards has a stake in this, and hence everyone should be given the chance to be a part of the decision-making process. We, the residents, deserve a say in our future.

  • Obviously old news, it's gone ahead with more questions around every corner!

Please sign this petition to demand real public consultation on the Lithium (and every) mine in uMzumbe Ray Nkonyeni KZN. This is not the only application - see map above 🤬

Please sign and share this Petition ✅ 👍it is key👌for communication, and to demonstrate numbers. The mining plan is 💯 worse than we thought, 'prospecting' applications from Scottburgh to Port Edward 🤬
As far as we're aware SA Lithium's 'prospecting' Public Participation meetings were in 2023, by Aug 2024 they produced the devastating video in the media library here🤬Without rezoning approval??? That was only granted in September 2024...
Prospecting is sinister and land grabbing 😖farmers are selling, not always willingly. People are getting forcibly removed. Division is their game. We have to unite👏
