We, the concerned alumni and students of LUMS, along with support from the civic society of Pakistan, and students of various other schools and Universities, across Pakistan, demand the immediate removal of the Vice-chancellor of LUMS, Mr. Sohail Naqvi.

Mr. Sohail Naqvi has failed to address the issue of sexual harassment at the University, leading to a stifling environment for the students.  We feel, the following actions by Mr. Naqvi constitute gross negligence, and a break of trust placed in him by the students at LUMS:

  • Failure to act when the complainant first approached him about the matter. Suggested a mediation between the accussed, and the complainant by the Head of the Deparment, despite the complainant expressing no confidence in the ability of the Law department to be impartial, or just.
  • Forcing the complainant to have to sit through mediation with the man accussed, and later proved guilty, of harassing her.
  • Telling the parents of the complainant that the accussed will not be removed, before any inquiry committee was formed.
  • Failing to adhere to the sexual harassment policy at LUMS, which states a matter must be resolved within 30 days.
  • For allowing the accussed to hire a Lawyer to represent him in front of the internal inquiry. (The complainant was represented by herself, without any lawyer, despite the complainant being a student and the accuser being a professor of law.)
  • Accepting the demand of the accussed to change the Head of the inquiry committee calling into question its impartiality.
  • Failure to act on the report of the inquiry committee that found the accused, Abid Hussain Imam, guilty of 'highly unprofessional conduct, highly unbecoming of a faculty member', engaging in regular behaviour disparaging the students' religion, culture and poverty. Apart from finding that Abid Hussain Imam also engaged in sexual inneundos with the students, the Inquiry commitee also said Abid Hussain Imam ridiculed unprivileged students, making fun of NOP students, and their families in public.
  • Responding with, "You are too valuable a faculty member, and we will discss this on my return." to Abid Hussain Imam's threat of resignation after the decision of the inquiry committee.
  • Failing to remove Abid Hussain Imam from office.
  • Telling Abid Hussain Imam he was shocked that the matter even became an issue, when he approached him.<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:RelyOnVML/> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]-->
  • Creating a threatening environment, or allowing a threatening environment to be created making the student fel threatened not to pursu her case.
  • Failing to distance himself, and the University, from the public statement used by some of its former, and current, employees.
  • Failing to address the matter at all in Public.

We feel all these actions, and lack of actions, by the Vice-chancellor, merit his removal from service. The VC should be a person that the student body can trust, by failing to remain impartial and being complacent to instances of sexual harassment in the University, Mr. Sohail Naqvi has misplaced the trust of the students.

We demand the immediate removal of Sohail Naqvi by the board of trustees at LUMS, and the formation of an inquiry committee to review his involvement in the cover up.
