Remove CPM from PUSD

Remove CPM from PUSD
The Issue
College Preparatory Mathematics.
Over 15 years ago, California piloted this teaching program and threw it out. Yet now, it's back. The same books, same practices, same CPM program is being used in ALL math classes. And We Don't Want It Back.
The reason is simple, the entire approach CPM uses is dysfunctional, especially for advanced courses offered in high school such as calculus. For most of the class period, students are expected to "conjecture" and slowly struggle their way through the topic, just as in elementary school. Students simply cannot get a strong foundation for important math concepts if it takes 45 minutes to learn something that takes 10 minutes to teach.
Instead of a teacher explaining the curriculum, students are forced to figure it out on their own first, getting confused. This makes both students and teachers frustrated as they waste their time trying to correct mistakes that could have been prevented.
Additionally, the textbooks are rarely helpful for the students. They are filled with classwork and homework problems, leaving out the traditional resources that students often rely on for review. They should contain notes and solutions for sample problems in order for students to check and learn concepts; however, these means have simply disappeared from CPM textbooks. Instead, half of the homework problems are review on previous chapters that aren't helpful for students to solidify their knowledge on the subject they're learning, and the answer keys are frequently, annoyingly wrong.
This ludicrous teaching system needs to be stopped and replaced. Our education is too valuable to be "failed" through a pilot program. Join us to fix our education, and the generations' ahead. Your signature counts.
