Protect Princess Vlei, which is a wetland and stop the Mall development

The Issue

Reasons to support the Petition, Campaigning for the Rights of Princess Vlei to remain a Wetland
1) Princess Vlei is part of a conglomeration of Vlei's in the Cape Flats area which are all interlinked. The Vlei's are Zeekoevlei, Zandvlei, Rondevlei to name a few

2) The proposed Mall will be 9 090msquare. Construction on such a large circumference will affect the natural biodiversity of Princess Vlei which includes, delicate fynbos, the wonderful birdlife that is attracted to the wetlands, the spritual site where baptisms takes place will be affected by people flow. This will affect the spiritual nature of the baptisms and the sense of been able to commune with nature

3) Princess Vlei is in the heart of the Cape Flats where people during the time of apartheid was forcibly removed

4) Hence Prince Vlei represents different memories for people of the Cape Flats who has a direct Heritage link to the Vlei in terms of their Khoisan links and the history of spritiual baptisms that have played a focal role in many religious people's spirituality
5) More importantly, the area is surrounded by lower income housing and dense flats that have no room to breathe!

6)Princess Vlei therefor represents a green lung in the heart of displaced people, some whom are still fighting to return to their spiritual roots from areas in Cape Town from whence they were displaced through apartheid legislation

7) The analogy of a fire can be equally represented at Princess Vlei. Many people have lived through a fire. One of the key things we lose when having exsperienced a fire, are our memories, which are photographs of our families. These memories are irreplaceable as they have been razed to the ground to embers.

8) Not listening to the outrage of the community that are directly linked to Princess Vlei is synonomous with third degree burns. The pain is unbearable and it means we get to relive the dispossession of our families during the time of apartheid

9) It tramps on our wonderful legacy of our former President Nelson Mandiba, who was incarcerated for 27 years in the fight for justice and democracy for all South Africans.

10) Primarily, it is just wrong to tamper with nature for commercial gain which will line the pockets of a very few privilaged people
