The residents of the historic neighborhood of College Hill strongly object to the lengthy special variances and adjustments approved by the City Plan Commission (CPC) on June 19, 2020, inconsistent with the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance which was thoughtfully developed and adopted by the City Council in November 24, 2014, after multiple years of public hearings. To change the Zoning Ordinance for one developer to tear down three (3) 19th century houses which are contributing structures of the College Hill National Historic Landmark District and replace with a 5-story hotel, 76,510 sq feet, 118 rooms, only 40 parking spots, liquor license, all across from a school building is not justified and consistent with the existing Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance! This proposed zoning change will be heard by the Providence Ordinance Committee on July 27, let your voice be heard and please sign this petition.
Angell Street is the main thoroughfare that runs one way and the principal single lane street that connects the East Side with downtown Providence. The immediate neighborhood consists of a house of worship, a school and a bank, in addition to residents. It already has heavy traffic and on school days Angell and Brook Streets have school buses and cars picking up children at Wheeler and Hamilton Schools. There are active RIPTA bus lines on Angell and on Brook Streets. Please sign to show your support of keeping the publicly adopted Zoning in place according to the Comprehensive Plan of 2014.
Changing the zoning of our neighborhood is not the solution. It will have a permanent adverse impact upon existing downtown hotels and the valued employment. It is not acceptable for one developer to be the cause of such a significant change to the exiting Zoning Ordinance. This issue has been voted on twice by the CPC. In November 2019, it was defeated and in June 2020, after reapplication, it won narrowly on a 4-3 vote despite only a 6% change in the number of hotel rooms. This is not acceptable to the residents of the College Hill neighborhood. Please sign to show your support of keeping the publicly adopted Zoning in place according to the Comprehensive Plan of 2014.
A change in the zoning would affect negatively all of the neighbors who are residents, schools, houses of worship, all of whom live and work in this area. Please listen to your neighbors, the recommendation of College Hill Neighborhood Association, the Providence Preservation Society and elected leaders such as Councilman Goncalves, Councilwoman Anthony and Representative Edie Ajello, all of whom do not support the proposed change in existing zoning for one building. A zoning change is permanent for our neighborhood. Residential and commercial traffic along Angell and Brook Streets would be negatively affected forever. This proposed zoning change sets a dangerous precedent....it could happen on your block next. Keep College Hill Neighborhood for the neighbors, the houses of worships, the schools and the taxpaying residents.
