The Issue

We all use water in our day-to-day lives. It’s bad enough that we have to wash our clothes and dishes, brush our teeth, and bathe in this water. But we shouldn’t have to drink it!

Water is a basic necessity, and access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right. Unfortunately, the residents of Creedmoor have been facing significant challenges in this regard. Contaminants and pollutants in our water supply not only affect our wellbeing but pose alarming health risks to every resident, young and old. This is unacceptable!

The health implications of drinking contaminated water are extensive and well-documented. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), exposure to water pollutants over time increases the risk of severe health issues, including gastrointestinal diseases, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders. Ensuring access to clean water is not just a matter of public health but a community responsibility.

One practical, immediate solution is for the City of Creedmoor to provide water filters to its residents. By distributing filters designed to remove contaminants, we can at least guarantee the safety of our drinking water while longer-term infrastructure improvements are developed. This step is vital to ensure that all families in Creedmoor can enjoy what most people take for granted - safe, healthy drinking water.

The City of Creedmoor has a duty to protect its residents from harm and ensure a standard of living that is both healthy and dignified. By providing water filters to our homes, Creedmoor will set a precedent for other communities facing similar challenges and show that it prioritizes the health and wellbeing of its citizens.

We must urge the local government to take action now. By signing this petition, you support a proactive and necessary step toward safeguarding the health of every resident in Creedmoor. Encourage our leaders to distribute water filters to every household and reinforce our right to clean, uncontaminated drinking water. Stand with us in this effort and help make a significant impact on our community’s quality of life.

The Decision Makers

Robert Wheeler
Former Creedmoor City Mayor
Responded
Thank you for reaching out. I have done some additional research on this issue and have checked with several sources. Some were verifiable and some were word of mouth from people with experience. As you know, Creedmoor does not own the water system and the responsibility of clean water is that of the entity that provides it and I believe that is the direction your efforts should be directed. That way it is a benefit to all their customers and not just Creedmoor. That being said there are some other issues with the city providing filters. Primarily legal based on information from the city attorney. Two, financial- providing filters would be a temporary fix as the filter component would have to be replaced periodically and they are expensive. Third, the filters being suggested do not filter out Manganese and iron which are what’s causing (as I understand it) the bad smell and color. I would like to provide every one in Creedmoor with a filter device and unlimited replacement filters but that is financially impossible. Also, from one source, if creedmoor was to provide filters, the city would be responsible for installation and maintenance of each filter as well as replacement of the filters when they need to be replaced. If true, we do not have the money or staff to achieve that outcome. Let me assure you, the City is trying it’s best to get SGWASA to take care of this issue and I believe they are working as fast as they can but it is a expensive and time consuming project. Additionally, we are not completely sure the problem is SGWASA as many of our residents have extremely old pipes carrying the water into their houses which could be contributing to the problem. I’m sure there is other issues with providing filters and I will be happy to pass your concerns with more knowledgeable individuals, but I hope this helps with understanding the problems we are facing with the issue of filter. While this is in response to your concerns, this is currently the best response I can give you. Please feel free to reach out with any specific questions and if I cannot answer them, I will be happy to relay them to someone who may be able to help. I will also state that while I can voice my opinion, the Mayor has NO VOTE in these decisions. Please consider reaching out to our representatives on the SGWASA Board. Mayor Bobby Wheeler
