📣 CHANGE OF PLANS FOR TOMORROW - but we’re still gathering. 💙

Dear CAAR (California Alliance for Adoptee Rights) and other supporters of Adoptee Birth Certificate Access,

There’s been a major development, and we want you to hear it from us directly: the SB 381 hearing will not proceed tomorrow. Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab and our entire coalition were ready to fight for SB 381 in its clean form. But Assembly Health Committee Chair, Assemblymember Mia Bonta, would not allow the bill to be heard unless we accepted all the terrible amendments that would take California adoptee rights backward - requiring adult adoptees to get birth parent consent to access their own original birth certificate, among other harmful restrictions.

We refused to trade away our rights - and because we and Senator Wahab wouldn’t accept her amendments, Assemblymember Bonta pulled the bill. That’s not a defeat. That’s us protecting what SB 381 stands for.

But we’re not letting this moment pass quietly - and we’d still love to see you.

Stay tuned for more developments.

For everyone already traveling, or already in town, please still join us:

We’ll gather, stand together, and definitely take a few photos with the Capitol behind us - a visible reminder that California’s adoptees showed up, even when the Health Committee Chair wouldn’t let our clean bill (with so much support!) even be heard.

Let’s stand together one more time before we come back even stronger. 💙

Please note: This petition will remain open until we get a clean bill signed.

With gratitude and determination,

Lori, Paul, Wendy, Emily & the CAAR team
