Thank you for signing our petition. SB 381 - Wahab, will provide unrestricted access to original birth certificates to California born adult adoptees. It has already passed the Senate Judiciary and Health Committees. Next Tuesday morning, it is voted on in the Senate Appropriations Committee. This is where they determine the cost. We have helped with cost analysis, but need phone calls to the offices of the Senate Appropriations members. You can get this done easily in about ten minutes by leaving messages on their answering machines. They listen to all phone calls and make note of them.
We have reached a critical point and need to counter a negative bill analysis that was published Saturday. We have decided that we DO need to make phone calls in addition to working behind the scenes. Please share this post and encourage messages to be left at the Appropriations Committee office and at the office of every committee member. I am calling to urge a yes vote on Senator Wahab’s bill, SB 381, access to original birth certificates, in the Appropriations Hearing this week.
The costs to implement SB 381 should be minor and absorbable. A review of similar bills enacted in other states over the last 5 years shows no fiscal note attached to any of the bills as it was determined in each case that there would be no fiscal impact.
Furthermore, the fees to obtain an original birth certificate should help offset any costs.
This bill is a matter of civil rights and equal rights. Please do pass SB 381.
