The Issue

Graduation is a monumental moment in a student's life. It's a day to celebrate years of hard work and dedication, surrounded by family and friends. For me, this graduation is especially significant because my grandma, who speaks only Spanish, will be attending. It's her first time witnessing one of her grandchildren receive a diploma. However, the entire ceremony will be in English, leaving her and other non-English speaking relatives out of the experience.

This isn't just my story. There are countless students at universities in Houston and around the country whose family members come from diverse linguistic backgrounds. These families have supported us through our academic journeys, yet language barriers can prevent them from fully experiencing the pride and joy of graduation day.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 40% of Houston's population speaks a language other than English at home, highlighting the city’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity. Thus, providing translation devices at commencement ceremonies is not only considerate but necessary for inclusion.

By equipping our graduation ceremonies with translation devices, all families, regardless of their native language, can partake in and understand this important event. These devices are becoming increasingly common and affordable, with options for simultaneous translation that ensure a seamless experience.

Let's make our university commencement inclusive for everyone. It's a small change that would mean the world to so many families, offering an inclusive space where everyone can share in the educational achievements of their loved ones.

Join me in asking our university administration to provide translation devices at graduation ceremonies. Sign this petition to support a more inclusive and equitable commencement for all students and their families.
