Provide separate bike lanes in Pune for rider safety
The Issue
Every day, as a resident and daily commuter in Pune, I navigate the chaotic and congested roads on my bike. Like thousands of other two-wheeler riders, I am painfully aware of the risks we take each time we leave our homes. The roads are not just overcrowded; they are frequently hazardous, riddled with potholes, and lack designated areas for bikers, forcing us into dangerous interactions with larger vehicles.
In Pune, over 25 lakh people rely on two-wheelers for commuting daily. This staggering number is a testament to the importance of ensuring safe commuting conditions. According to a recent report by the Pune Traffic Police, nearly 60% of all road accidents in the city involve two-wheelers, often due to the lack of proper infrastructure catering to our needs. The absence of dedicated bike lanes means that everyday journeys become life-threatening challenges. It is clear that without significant changes, such as dedicated bike lanes, the rate of accidents, injuries, and fatalities will continue to rise.
In addition to the human cost, accidents involving two-wheelers also place a significant burden on our healthcare system and local economy. Medical expenses and loss of productivity affect not only the families of those injured but also the community as a whole. Implementing separate bike lanes would reduce these accidents and benefit the city economically and socially.
The solution is clear and achievable. We are calling upon the Pune Municipal Corporation and relevant authorities to prioritize the development of well-planned bike lanes on all major roads. These lanes should be clearly marked, regularly maintained, and adequately protected from encroachment by other vehicles. Drawing inspiration from cities around the world that have successfully integrated bike lanes, Pune can create a safer, more efficient road network that promotes alternative modes of transportation.
Creating a safer environment for two-wheeler riders not only saves lives but also encourages more people to opt for bikes over cars, reducing congestion and pollution. This change would ensure that commuters like myself, who contribute to the economy and pay road taxes, feel valued and protected.
I urge you to join me in demanding safer roads for Pune's two-wheeler community. Let's work together to make our city a model for road safety and modern urban planning. Sign this petition to show our local government that the people of Pune demand and deserve safer roads for all.
