Our friends have faced a concerning safety issue repeatedly during their inpatient stays at SickKids hospital in Toronto. Their child, like many others, was at high risk of falling out of the bed provided, causing constant worry.  Shockingly, the beds lack adequate safety rails designed to prevent falls, which should not be the case at a children's hospital known for providing excellent care.

SickKids hospital operates with a notable reputation, and yet, parents are forced to be extra vigilant throughout the night due to unsafe sleeping conditions. This not only compromises the safety of the children but also imposes undue stress and exhaustion on the parents who are there to support their young ones through illness.

Statistics from the World Health Organization suggest that adequate bed safety can significantly reduce the risk of falls, which are one of the leading causes of hospital visits for children. Yet, this basic safety provision seems to be overlooked. While the hospital continues to expand and invest in office buildings, it is imperative that funds be redirected towards improving patient necessities, such as safe beds with proper rails, to prevent avoidable accidents.

There are feasible solutions to this issue, and they need immediate attention. The hospital should allocate resources to retrofit existing beds with enhanced safety rails or acquire new beds designed specifically for children who require extra protection while sleeping. Such measures not only align with best practice recommendations but reiterate the hospital's commitment to prioritizing patient safety and care.
